Modern Ancient is a solo exhibition by Shizico Yi, composed in Five movements — a show unfolds beyond the conventional format of an exhibition. Through this curatorial project, Shizu weaves textures, colours, forms, and styles into visual musical notes on humanity, beauty, grief, aging, and the essence of being human.
Over the past twelve months, Shizico has developed branches of projects, each serving as a movement — a form or style akin to a passage in a classical music composition. Shizu references each series of artwork on the history of arts, ranging from Japanese Woodblock print, golden joinery Kintsugi 金継ぎ, to Impressionism, from Monet, Van Gogh to Matisse.
Together, these projects situate the collection within a broader cultural and historical backdrop, tracing its lineage to the great artists who came before, those who paved the way for us.
With this foundation, Modern Ancient embraces a new sense of modern-day freedom — Shizu takes this concept as an invitation to explore how the ancient and the contemporary coexist, converse, and ultimately, she continues to reinvent and gives birth to new works.

Our Studio ethos
Rooted deeply in our local community, we live and work in rhythm with the place around us—its daily café conversations, green spaces, weekend activities, workshops, art classes and artists’ forums. Our art gallery welcomes both permanence and change: a curated daily exhibition of works for sale, alongside a guest-artist programme with gallery space available for hire. Each year we open our doors to an artist-in-residence through an open call, nurturing new voices and new visions.
Our studio practice continues the heart of our work—ongoing projects, experiments, and the quiet discipline of daily making. Alongside this, our Design Studio creates two fashion collections annually, balancing timeless classic pieces with seasonal designs, all available through our shop. Our online store extends this world outward, bringing our fashion, artworks, design objects, selected art pieces and limited editions from our corner of Britain to the globe.
We work with local art and design students as paid interns, building a creative ecosystem that grows through shared experience. We collaborate with regional hotels and high-end restaurants, offering artworks for display and enriching the visual life of the community’s business environment.
The way our artists live is the way we work: making, breathing, noticing. The studio is our centre—a place of atelier energy, a showroom, a gallery, a café, an art shop, a garden tea room, an independent fashion house, a designers’ workshop. It is a place for a sense of wonder, where the mind and eyes can wander, travel, and return inspired.
