Modern Ancient is our latest solo exhibition by Shizico Yi, composed in Five movements — a show unfolds beyond the conventional format of an exhibition. Through this curatorial project, Shizu weaves textures, colours, forms, and styles into visual musical notes on humanity, beauty, grief, aging, and the essence of being human.
Over the past twelve months, Shizico has developed branches of projects, each serving as a movement — a form or style akin to a passage in a classical music composition. Shizu references each series of artwork on the history of arts, ranging from Japanese Woodblock print, golden joinery Kintsugi 金継ぎ, to Impressionism, from Monet, Van Gogh to Matisse.
Together, these projects situate the collection within a broader cultural and historical backdrop, tracing its lineage to the great artists who came before, those who paved the way for us. For the first time, this new body of work of 80 will be presented in one solo collection. This show, Modern Ancient, is conceived as a “long song” in 5 movements.
Connections between individual works are developed in dialogue with Shizico Yi. Their interrelationship and exchange also extends to her new poems.
Modern Ancient embraces a new sense of modern-day freedom; Shizu takes this concept as an invitation to explore how the ancient and the contemporary coexist, converse, and ultimately, she continues to reinvent and gives birth to new works.

Jardin d'Hiver Series is created in Shizico Yi’s winter studio while longing for the summer left behind. Reflecting on the vibrant days spent painting en plein air, she revisits the Dahlias and Roses Collection in her garden during the summer of 2024.
This series is a tribute to those cherished moments, through painting, she transforms her studio into a winter garden—bringing summer night to life on canvas, based on the images of her summer garden the year before.
To Shizico, dahlias symbolise resilience and longevity. Their long blooming season, stretching from summer into the early winter chill, brings much-needed colour to the herbaceous border of her garden during the duller months, here is the image of her moonlit Dahlias in the night.
Shizico is also exploring the medium of impasto in this series which enhances the vivid brushstrokes with a three-dimensional surface. By sculpting the florals into textured forms, the paintings further capture the energy and vibrancy of summer on canvas.

About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
